![]() ![]() The author of this article, Dr Oliver Tearle, is a literary critic and lecturer in English at Loughborough University. ![]() ![]() You might also enjoy our pick of the best morning poems, our poems for night-time, and our poems about the sun and sunsets. What wonderful paean to sunsets would you add to our list?įor more classic poetry, we recommend The Oxford Book of English Verse – perhaps the best poetry anthology on the market (we offer our pick of the best poetry anthologies here). That concludes our pick of ten of the greatest evening poems. ‘The Fury of Sunsets’ is a wonderfully raw and angry poem, containing the wonderful lines ‘All day I’ve built a lifetime and now the sun sinks to undo it.’ Who hasn’t felt like that some evenings? But Sexton’s work is distinct from Plath’s, and hers is a distinctive voice. Sexton (1928-74) was an American confessional poet, a contemporary of Sylvia Plath she also, like Plath, took her own life. It’s a good description: Larkin’s likening of the evening to approaching death, and the comparison of both to a silken bedsheet or piece of clothing, make for a memorable poem – and that’s to say nothing of the questions with which the poem ends. This short, unrhymed poem by Philip Larkin was called a ‘belated Imagist’ piece by the noted Larkin critic and biographer James Booth. We have analysed this beautiful evening poem here. It seems a rather straightforward poem, but, as with that other Frost poem, its simplicity is only on the surface, and is belied here by several things, including the sophisticated rhyme pattern Frost employs. This is one of the most perennially popular evening poems, so had to be included here!įrost called this poem ‘my best bid for remembrance’. One of Frost’s best-loved poems if not the best-loved (the rival would be ‘The Road Not Taken’), ‘Stopping by Woods’, like Hardy’s ‘The Darkling Thrush’, takes a wintry evening as its setting but goes further into the woods than Hardy did (who was merely leaning ‘upon a coppice gate’). Robert Frost, ‘ Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’. ![]() With visions, alien to long streets, of Cytharea The poem is short enough to be reproduced in full here:Īlluring, Earth seducing, with high conceits Hulme wrote as an illustration of what he thought modern English poetry should be, following the French vers libre (or free verse) model.įew poets before Hulme had thought to compare the red sunset to the naked flesh of a mistress of King Charles II, but the unusual simile only makes his poem all the more arresting and his description of the evening sunset – as seen by a London-dweller – even more visceral and vivid. However, Housman seems to have borrowed the phrase from Shakespeare’s Macbeth (‘The gaudy, blabbing, and remorseful day / Is crept into the bosom of the sea’) – but what he does with the phrase is quite arresting and memorable here.Īlong with his more famous poem ‘Autumn’, this was one of the first two poems T. The last line of the poem gave Colin Dexter the title of his final Inspector Morse novel, The Remorseful Day in the books, Housman is Morse’s favourite poet. Okay, so the first two stanzas of this poem address the morning and daytime, but it’s for the sublime final stanza that we’ve included this poem here. Housman, ‘ How clear, how lovely bright’. The poem’s speaker leans upon a woodland gate and views the land around him as a symbol of the events of the nineteenth century, the ‘Century’s corpse outleant’ the speaker is made a part of the scene, not just a detached observer, as ‘outleant’ echoes the speaker’s own action at the start of the poem (‘I leant upon a coppice gate’).Ī thrush appears, and sings so joyfully that the speaker is convinced that the bird knows something he does not – that the thrush singing in the twilight knows of brighter days to come.Ħ. This classic Hardy poem captures the mood of a winter evening as the sun, ‘the weakening eye of day’, sets below the horizon and gives way to dusk on New Year’s Eve. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() “You can’t reason with people whose whole purpose is to get your attention and subtract you.”.“There’s a saying “if you have haters, you are doing something right,” but I disagree - at this point if you have haters you’re doing anything.”.“Look at your work as a contract you have with yourself.”.That way when I bombed an audition or the video wasn’t as good as it could have been, I had an excuse: I hadn’t had enough time to try my best. “Procrastination had become my coping mechanism.Going public doesn’t mean that the public gets to define you.” “It made me realise I should quit trying to please everyone and just say whatever the hell I want. The toe is still broken, and you have to make up for that somehow.” “You accidentally step on someone’s toe and break it, it doesn’t matter that you didn’t mean to break their toe.“Why are you doing this? Do you want to raise awareness of a problem, or do you want to raise awareness of your Twitter account, which you believe is scandalously underflowed?”.“My feminism extends to women I don’t like, however misguided they may be, and so should yours.”.“The sense of deep moral righteousness each party feels in the moment, furiously typing clawbacks and subtweets before members of the opposing #TeamWhoever can get their barbs in, gives the whole thing the illusion of importance when it is almost always infighting or attention seeking.”.“There are experts in the field of Problematic Archaeology who will spend hours coming through your tweets and preteen blogging efforts to uncover the most offensive artefacts of your past.”.As a white women I will never fully understand, which is why I try to let those who do understand take the platform and if I can broadcast them, not my own ideas. Other than that I can follow most of the thought processes and there is a lot of statements I can get behind. I feel like the evolution of language is grossly overlooked in some of the hot takes on certain expressions, and ‘hey guys’ has long transformed in a common, general greeting to address a group of varying people, not just for men. Second thing I disagree with is that we shouldn’t say ‘hey guys’ because it can make not-guys feel uncomfortable. Additionally, I feel like bringing up that Jenna once said “she was crucified” in an interview (which she was, however with reason it might have been) is not taking into account the growth that did absolutely occur afterwards. I disagree with that, because nobody gets to decide for someone else how they want to handle their mistakes in the public eye. ![]() There are two main things that I vehemently oppose. The first one is the notion that Jenna Marbles when she privately apologised to Franchesca about the whole slutshaming video should have publicly apologised because otherwise it ‘didn’t count’ (I’m paraphrasing but that’s the vibe it gave off). It is a strong, fun book with a headstrong tone at times, but it’s not radically out there. I feel like calling it kooky would be a disservice to everything that real activism is about so no, this is not a kooky book. To learn more about it from the OG SJW in this book? Really freaking cool. On her activism she says: “It felt like an uphill battle, but one I genuinely thought worth it” which I think is a beautiful sentiment.Īlthough I have quietly but wholeheartedly withdrawn from Twitter activism, in my real life I work every day to be inclusive and intersectional in my feminism. There are things in her perspective that I fundamentally disagree with, but I like how her book educates and her approach in the book is very light-hearted. I can imagine that if you are an online activist or if you are interested in learning more about activism and social justice, this is a book you’d like to have a hardcopy of! SUBJECTįranchesca! Like a lot of Youtube and influencer books it is about themselves, but Franchesca is a little bit more interesting than the average Beauty Guru in Youtube land, because her online presence very much focuses on activism and comedy. I bought the Kindle version but there is a print copy available as well. When I saw she had a book out I was pretty curious about it, especially with the tagline “Memoirs and Mistakes of an Accidental Activist.” In my mind Franchesca was always the activist. I used to watch a bit of Franchesca on Youtube and always liked her a lot. If you want to know more about her or activism, Well That Escalated Quickly is an excellent book to read over the summer. I read Franchesca Ramsey’s book on her career in both media and activism and it was a good read. ![]() ![]() ![]() May 18 00:56:09 pfSense racoon: ERROR: notification INITIAL-CONTACT received in aggressive exchange. Note how the greens in the stone above pop when juxtaposed with our top exterior color of 2023! It can also ground homes with lots of stone cladding or deep black hues. We love using Mountain Road as a field color and pairing it with rich wood, blacks and near-blacks, and warm off-whites. It all comes together for an organic aesthetic excellent for the home’s deep forest environment. Īs a counterpoint to the brighter color schemes above, the rustic home design below features Mountain Road on the window trim and deck alongside Sherwin Williams’ Rock Bottom - a deep, dark green that verges on black - on the siding and eaves. WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND SAMPLING AND TESTING PAINT COLORS BEFORE COMMITTING. In this choice color scheme, our favored gray-green provides depth and dimension to the larges swaths of warm off-white. On the designs above and below, we used Mountain Road with Shoji White on the cladding. While we love Mountain Road as a field color, it’s also an excellent choice as an accent. Mountain Road will feel more green when surrounded by lush green landscaping, and we particularly love it with purple plants (lilacs, lavender, coleus, etc.). This is because Mountain Road has a near even mix of red and green in its RGB (red-green-blue) breakdown, while Anonymous leans heavier on the red. While Mountain Road reads green-gray, Anonymous has a strong brown note to it. Mountain Road is similar to another Sherwin Williams paint color we love, the complex neutral Anonymous. ( Learn all about LRV here.) However, we tend to think of this hue as a warm, deeper mid-range color. Sherwin Williams’ Mountain Road has an LRV of 23, meaning it falls in the darker range. It’s right at home on rustic façades, like the one above, but we also love using this color on traditional or transitional homes. Mountain Road has a soft, gentle feeling to it, making it an easy complement to a wide variety of building materials. It’s a warm, deeper mid-range gray-green that delivers in so many executions. We’re leaning in to the earth tones right now, and Sherwin Williams’ Mountain Road is the quintessential paint color for an earthy exterior palette. Learn more about our exterior design services. And Black Beauty ( our 2022 favorite) found its way into many of our designs over this past year, something we don’t see changing any time soon. Benjamin Moore’s Seapearl ( our 2021 pick) is still a go-to of ours, proving its versatility and timelessness. First, we looked back at our top paint colors of 20. After many hours of deliberation, looking both at our body of work and client requests over this past year and what we’re seeing in the broader world of home and exterior design, we’re ready to announce the top exterior house color 2023 will usher in. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you’re only going to buy one or two towers, make sure to choose this one. There are a few places, especially in the end game, where this tower was invaluable.īlazing Gem is a little boring, but extremely powerful in the right circumstances. Once it attaches its beam, the tower will make short work of anything. The Blazing Gem is the perfect kind of tower for big, slow enemies that are hard to kill. As the tower is upgraded, the beam grows more powerful the longer it attacks a single target. Instead of lobbing slow, powerful magic blasts, Blazing Gem fires a single, powerful beam at an enemy as they walk by. The Blazing Gem is a pretty familiar tower for Kingdom Rush veterans. However, when fully upgraded, the frequency of the stuns and ability to lock enemies in a small area for a long time is pretty impressive. This tower is very situational, and can be pretty easily replaced with the more powerful boiler. The abilities also benefit troops, and can create roots to stun opponents as well as additional tree allies to occupy opposing enemies. The best use for the Rotten Forest is to be a single area tower in an choke point filled with allied troops that can keep the enemies in the Rotten Forest’s range. Enemies constantly take damage as they wander over these - although the damage numbers themselves are pretty pitiful. In a small, 360-degree area around the tower, damaging roots will rise up from the ground. The Rotten Forest acts similarly to the boiler. ![]() Of the purchasable towers, this is easily one of our favorites. With the right turret makeup surrounding the cemetery, nothing will make it past your roadblock of undead ghouls. ![]() Placing two or even three of these next to each other essentially creates an impassable wall of zombies. While playing, we found this tower to be very useful in choke points with multiple tower spots. As you level it up, you can buff these zombies and even make them explode once you unlock abilities. But unlike most troop towers that require a specific rally point, the Grim Cemetery spawns weak minions all around its area. The Grim Cemetery is a troop-based tower. All of these towers are viable in certain situations, but not all of them are worth the price of individual purchase. Kingdom Rush: Vengeance locks the Grim Cemetery, the Rotten Forest, the Blazing Gem, the Wicked Sisters and the Goblin War Zeppelin towers behind microtransactions - ranging from $2.99 to $6.99. So the question is, are they worth your extra money? Locked towers We got to play with these locked towers and heroes during our review of Kingdom Rush: Vengeance. At launch, Kingdom Rush: Vengeance will give players 11 towers over the course of the game, and locks five more behind a paywall. However, Kingdom Rush: Vengeance’s new tower loadout system has provided the team at Ironhide Game Studios a chance to add additional towers to the roster. Like Kingdom Rush games before it, Kingdom Rush : Vengeance offers additional heroes for sale on top of the few you unlock during the campaign. ![]() ![]() ![]() With one of the best turnaround times in the industry, a diverse array of customized loan products to fit almost every need, from reverse mortgages, new homes and second residences, with purchase and refinance options, Moneyhouse provides some of the most competitive rates, products and programs available in today’s marketplace.
